Cigarette filters as sorbent in solid phase extraction

Cigarette filters (CFs) are employed to reduce the amount of smoke and toxic substances (tar and particulate matter) inhaled during smoking. Commercial filters usually consist on a large number of cellulose acetate fibers which act as particulate sieves as well as contaminant traps. The latter aspect, based on the chemical interaction of CFs with different organic substances, permits their use as sorptive phase in solid phase extraction (SPE). The first application of CFs in this context was published by Yan et al. in 2003 for the determination of traces of methylmercury by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS).

Recently, Chen et al. have employed CFs for the extraction of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from environmental waters. The authors described a polar or dipole-dipole interaction between the analytes and the oxygen functional groups of the CFs to explain the extraction of the targets. The enrichment factors obtained for the analytes, which were in the range from 483 to 562, highlight the sorptive capacity of the CFs that allows the extraction of large volumes of sample (up to 500mL).

Almost simultaneously, Fang et al. have reported the use of CFs for the extraction of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides in water and soil samples following a simple SPE procedure. For soil samples, a previous solid-liquid extraction is required before the SPE. Although the results for water samples are comparable to those obtained using conventional C18, CFs improve clearly the limits of detection when soil samples are processed.
